Moving Tips - There a 2 ways to move.
#1 Do-It-Yourself Handling your own move allows you to move at your convenience and it is usually less costly than hiring professional movers (unless you damage your back lifting the piano). The downside is you’ll probably need to rent and drive an unfamiliar truck, rent furniture pads and dollies or hand trucks, and rely on family and friends to help.
#2 Let the Pros Do It It may be that you want to preserve your back and your friendships by hiring professional movers. There are many advantages for letting them do the work for you. They already have the materials and equipment they’ll need and the experience of having moved people before. But while it might make the move easier on you, hiring movers costs more than doing it yourself.
Insurance is another issue to think about. A movers basic coverage usually allows cents per pound per item. Full value insurance is available but it will cost more. Check to see if your homeowners policy covers your belongings during a move. If not, you should consider purchasing moving insurance.
Packing it up Remember packing yourself saves money but movers do not accept liability for breakage unless the box has been dropped during either the loading or unloading of the truck. If packing yourself the guideline is to start a month ahead of your move.
- Keep boxes to 50 pounds or less. Allow time to pack, don’t wear yourself out.
- Dispose of flammables and combustibles such as paint and gasoline.
- Seal tops of boxes and make sure the tops are level for stacking.
Tip: For long moves use up as much food as possible in the weeks before you leave. Give what you don’t use to a food bank or friends. Consider giving plants to friends or neighbors-they don’t transport well.
Moving Day Be ready when the movers arrive. Carry the following items with you.
- An overnight bag with a change of clothes, medications, and toiletries.
- Important personal records and documents.
- Cash, coins, checkbook, and jewelry
- A box of any items of great personal value to you that are virtually irreplaceable.
